My wife is probably the best cook I have ever known. When I was younger, my mother made everything out of a box. We practically lived off Hamburger Helper and Better Crocker. There is nothing wrong with that, but I was not used to good, homemade cooking. My wife’s mother, on the other hand, has always been an elaborate cook and I am sure that is where my wife gets it. However, I have seen her searching through our direct tv northern virginia guide looking for cooking shows. Perhaps she is getting it from Paula Dean or Rachel Ray. Wherever she is getting her skill and inspiration, I am just glad she is cooking for me. I should probably try and make her Hamburger Helper sometime and see what she thinks. Believe it or not, she has never even tried it. It is hard for me to imagine never having the stuff. I am sure it will be a shock for her when you consider what she is used to eating.

A Rare Rave

I know..I'm quite famous for my rants, both long and short, but today I'm going to do a rare Rave instead. So today's Rave is about the French fries at the McDonalds in Georgetown Illinois. They are always fresh, always hot. Not once in the 6 months since I have moved to this town have I ever gotten anything less than steaming hot French fries, no matter what time I go in there. Not to mention their service is fast too.

I really think I might be going slowly insane from waiting for Linux mint 12 KDE to arrive. I'm starting to wonder if I am going to have to abandon Mint entirely for a while until the SICK JOKE that is Gnome 3 gets a massive fix. I'm not really a KDE fan but I'm willing to give it a shot..in the meantime I'm distro surfing again..sigh.

Nobody would have guessed a few years back I’d be running my very own bed and breakfast. I was all about the big business world and it was tough for even me to imagine me doing anything but climbing the corporate ladder. I can only imagine what my family thought when I first told them I was going to do this! Anyway, here I am looking into Texas Electricity Providers and satin bedding and you know my life is totally changed for the different. I love that each and every day I get to interact with new customers and that I can make my own decisions about how the business is run. There’s something to be said for having your own business and being able to be flexible and you know, I can’t think of anything else I’d rather be doing. I mean, I love that I made such a big decision for my life and I’m thankful I’ve had so much support to get me where I am today.

I post all the time to my Blogger account..in fact, I use it to make a few bucks here and there. However, it's rare that I actually log in to my account, so when I did, I noticed there is a whole new look and feel to the settings and there is now a template designer. Of course, as I get bored easily, I like to change the looks of all my blogs, sites and everywhere else I am after a while. I took the opportunity to use my own artwork as the background for my blogger page, so check it out (yes that is MY artwork on the background, isn't it purty!) The degradation of Gnome

I recently had an opportunity to test out Gnome 3. I have already mentioned that I dont like it but I hadn't expanded on why that is. As the owner of two websites devoted to help new Linux users, I always appreciate when applications try to cater to being newbie friendly. However, I feel that Gnome 3 is a giant step in the wrong direction. Gnome 3 is very limiting to the end user in general. Everything is pretty much set up in the way it is set up and that is it. For all the people who hate the limiting manner of Unity desktop, you are going to feel right at hate with Gnome 3. Everything is decided for you, layout, categories...no customization. Sure there are work arounds..aren't there always but should users have to use a ton of work arounds in order to get a desktop that does what the user wants it to do? Isn't that defeating the purpose of using Linux? More than anyone I understand the importance of making applications user friendly but to make everything dummy proof is pretty much taking the point out of using Linux entirely.

As far as I'm concerned, if something doesn't let me have a little bit of creative flexibility, I just don't really care about doing it. I really like expressing myself in everything that I do in life. I think that anyone who walks into my home can definitely tell that too. I'm always creating things to hang up on my walls or taking on little projects to spruce up things to fit my own personal style.

I also like to get all kinds of ideas by following some of my favorite craft and interior design blogs with my wireless internet Portland. It seems like I'm always finding a new project to take on, however I don't know if I can always do all of them. Maybe if just doing that was my job, I could!

Well I took on the challenge of coming up with some really creative fall decor for my house. I got the idea to make some pumpkins a little better than jsut regular old ones. So I bought an assortment of cheap rhinestones and glued them on some of those littel baby pumpkins. It sounds weird but it ended up looking so cool!

Windows 8 secure boot would 'exclude' Linux

Microsoft wants firmware to only start authorised OSes

Computer scientists warn that proposed changes in firmware specifications may make it impossible to run “unauthorised” operating systems such as Linux and FreeBSD on PCs.

Proposed changes to the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) firmware specifications would mean PCs would only boot from a digitally signed image derived from a keychain rooted in keys built into the PC. Microsoft is pushing to make this mandatory in a move that could not be overridden by users and would effectively exclude alternative operating systems, according to Professor Ross Anderson of Cambridge University and other observers.

UEFI is a successor to the BIOS ROM firmware designed to shorten boot times and improve security. The framework, a key part of Windows 8, is designed to work on a variety of CPU architectures.

If the draft for UEFI is adopted without modification, then any system that ships with only OEM and Microsoft keys will not boot a generic copy of Linux. A signed version of Linux would work, but this poses problems, as tech blogger Matthew Garrett explains.

Garrett writes:

Firstly, we'd need a non-GPL bootloader. Grub 2 is released under the GPLv3, which explicitly requires that we provide the signing keys. Grub is under GPLv2 which lacks the explicit requirement for keys, but it could be argued that the requirement for the scripts used to control compilation includes that. It's a grey area, and exploiting it would be a pretty good show of bad faith.
Secondly, in the near future the design of the kernel will mean that the kernel itself is part of the bootloader. This means that kernels will also have to be signed. Making it impossible for users or developers to build their own kernels is not practical. Finally, if we self-sign, it's still necessary to get our keys included by ever OEM.

There's no indication that Microsoft will prevent vendors from providing firmware support for disabling this feature and running unsigned code. However, experience indicates that many firmware vendors and OEMs are interested in providing only the minimum of firmware functionality required for their market.

Garrett concluded that there is no need to panic just yet.

The upshot of the changes is that considerable roadblocks might be placed in the way of running alternative operating systems on PCs. Anderson describes this as a return to the rejected Trusted Computing architecture – which at that point involved force-feeding DRM copy-protection restrictions – which may be far worse than its predecessor.

The professor said:

These issues last arose in 2003, when we fought back with the Trusted Computing FAQ and economic analysis. That initiative petered out after widespread opposition. This time round the effects could be even worse, as 'unauthorised' operating systems like Linux and FreeBSD just won’t run at all. On an old-fashioned Trusted Computing platform you could at least run Linux – it just couldn’t get at the keys for Windows Media Player.
The extension of Microsoft’s OS monopoly to hardware would be a disaster, with increased lock-in, decreased consumer choice and lack of space to innovate.

Gnome 3

Okay, I downloaded Fedora 15..but not to review Fedora Linux..but to review Gnome 3. There are several things to like about it, such as the simplicity and ease of navigation..and it shore is purty. But, I don't like it. I use Linux for one main reason. It looks and does EXACTLY what I want it to do, not what some corporate entity wants it to. The feature set is exactly what Gnome needs. The taking away of customization is a horrible step in the (Windows) wrong direction. I get the need to revamp, and appeal to newbies, primarily refugees from Windoze..Clean it up, Team Gnome then I will be back to revisit this.

This is a test post for the Android app Smart Keyboard Pro. There are so many options for customizing the keyboard that I can't even name them all. For one, typing this post has been really fast and the prediction and word correction are amazingly accurate. Right now I have auto caps turned off, choice of prediction word color, key size, keyboard types for both portrait and landscape (I'm using t9 in portrait mode), gestures, skins and tons more..it will even pull words from the apps u use..so oft used words pop up in the prediction ..and I have a lot of words that exist only in my head..this typed out pretty fast.. and I find myself not using the correction key nearly as much as with other keyboards..I may actually keep this one

I have found that one of my favorite shows of all time is "the office". This show combines dry humor with possible real world situations. In doing so, you are able to laugh at what is happening to the characters while realizing that it is something that could have easily happened to you at the same time. There are not too many shows that are able to pull that off, and that is exactly what I like so much about it.

My favorite episode would have to be the one titled "the duel". This is an episode in which two of the men of the office challenge each other to a duel in order to try to best the other in competition for a women who works in the office. The randomness of this event is what really makes the show so great. You know that nothing like this would ever happen in the real world, but you suspend your belief system for a bit just to make the show fun.

I personally enjoy watching every episode of this show on my Satellite911.coM. It is a great way for me to be able to relax and unwind after a hard day of work. I think that there are many people out there who have yet to discover the show that would really love it. Only time will tell on that one.

Gingerbread happiness

I got to update to the long awaited Gingerbread version of Android a few days ago and let me say just some of the improvements are fire!! I love how I can go into my application manager and now be able to download 3rd party apps (although I think that was an AT&T thing) and I can go to the media area tab and choose which apps I want on my memory card...love the longer battery life, the darker skin, ability to choose what to clear on the notifications bar, and eagle is more awesome now too. The market update is weird though..I like it less.

I just got my gingerbread update yesterday for my Motorola Atrix and do far I am loving it! Swype is more responsive, the notification bar is improved, the skin colors are different and darker, and holy big bird! My battery life is showing a massive improvement and it was good to begin with! Can't wait to try it more stuff!

Space Shuttle Endings

Never thought I would live to see the day that American space shuttles would all be retired...with seats on Russian shuttles going for about 10 million each..American astronauts have effectively grounded for the next 5 years while private companies make their own shuttles to get astronauts to and from the space station. To me the question is..what is up there weshouldnt be seeing? Keep that question in mind in case all of a sudden China and Russia decide to ground their shuttles too. I just find it hard to believe that we are not going to be competitive in the space program anymore..since when does America give that stus up to anyone without a fight? I'm just saying it's a little weird..even with the future goals planned.

I was tired of being asked questions about Southern cuisine that I just didn't know the answer to, so I checked out some WIRELESS INTERNET pricing and started doing research about the basic cooking techniques from staff. Turns out, southern cooking isn't all that hard, it just requires a lot of patience in addition to a lot of salt and butter! Paula Deen sure knows what she's doing so I've been watching a lot of her shows lately to try and pick up some additional southern knowledge. That is, when I can even understand what she's saying! I feel much better prepared to make something delicious and authentic for my family this Thanksgiving and they're all going to be shocked at how well I know my way around the kitchen. I may even ask my cousin Sue if I can have a cast iron pan that my grandmother left her.

My absolute favorite restaurant is Burger King. I can think of no other restaurant that I would rather go to than a Burger King and every time that I go I always get a char grilled whopper with extra fries and a sweet tea. This meal makes me salivate just thinking about it. In fact, as soon as I finish this blog post, I will set the home security alarm (/) and hop in the car to my local burger King to grab a quick meal. I love Burger King because they are very informal and their staff is always friendly. I never have to wait in long longs or make a reservation to go eat there. When I am hungry, I simply go and get my food. They even hav! e a drive through so I don't even have to get out of my car if I don't want to.
I love eating at Burger King because they have all kinds of burgers and chicken sandwiches, as well as excellent fries and incredible milk shakes. Their food is excellent and it all has a flame grilled flavor because they cook all of their food over an open flame. This gives them their distinct taste which allows them, in my opinion, to stand out above every other restaurant. You will never regret a decision to go visit Burger King for your next meal.

Motorola Atrix

I am loving this phone! I just switched from Sprint, which I had endless network issues with, not to mention the Evo 4g which has all the battery life of a full size digital camera (ugh) to AT&T. I really wanted to go back to Verizon but I just couldn't afford it. I really miss my Droid. Now tho, this new phone I have is great. The Motorola Atrix is an awesome phone, very much like a Droid without the keyboard. The last month I had my Droid I didn't even use the keyboard anyway. I'm a total Swype addict. I always said I wouldn't get a touch screen only phone but Swype changed that. The best part is I can actually use the internet again! With the Evo I pretty much had to plug the damn thing into the wall just to see a web page! I haven't charged this phone figure since yesterday and I've all still got half the battery! Lovin it!

Upside down flag in Danville

Flying the American flag upside down is a symbol of distress. In Danville Illinois the American flag is flying upside down in several locations. The man responsible states he is doing this to signify that this country is in distress. Some find it disrespectful, but Songer says he is not being disrespectful, as he is a veteran, but showing the fact that this country is in trouble and he says he will leave the flags upside down until Congress passes a law protecting military pay in the event of governmental shutdown. I happen to agree, this country us in major distress.

Fixing the Speed Dial in Opera 11.10

Speed dial in Opera is awesome. I use it every day. All my favorite sites, with thumbnails, right in front of my face. Opera changed this for those who wanted infinite speed dial to a page of huge thumbnails and if there are more than 9 the page starts scrolling..if you have to scroll to find your speed dial box of choice, it becomes somewhat redundant. Here's my fix.

Dual boot adventures

The other day was quite the adventure when I decided to dual boot Meego Linux on my new Acer netbook that came with Windows 7 Starter. By the way that is the worst OS EVER! I repartitioned and installed Meego only to discover that upon reboot, it would only boot into Meego. No bootloader! Grrr! So I finally get back into Windows only to have it reinstall from the backup partition! So then it would only boot into Windows...after googling I found one person doing the same install as me and posted a tutorial. Unfortunately the steps didn't work for me. So, to see if the problem was universal I installed Ubuntu Netbook edition. Bootloader worked fine..unfortunately I despised UNE. So I took that off and rebooted...to have a grub error!!! More googling got a quick fix for that..back into Windows..then to reinstall Meego cuz I really like it. So then I got back into windows, just to have it run the repair again..ugh..then I downloaded a program to make a bootloader..after reinstalling Meego again..thank goodness it's fast..and I was able to create a bootloader that actually worked! So now I am happily using Meego, while keeping Windblows to use just for updating my daughters Nokia phone.

Well for a long time I've been needing a portable computing option but I hate trying to use the internet on a phone so I got a netbook. Its an Acer aspire one and its great...except that it has windows on it...ugh i had forgotten what a pain in the ass it is! Downloading Linux as I write!

Getting nostalgic with high school reads

I thought that it was about the greatest thing ever when my kids found all of my old paperback books at my parents' house when we went and visited them over the holidays. My mom told them that it was okay for them to take all of those books because she obviously wasn't using them. At first, before I let them have them I looked through them in case there were embarrassing notes or anything like that in them, but they were okay.
One of the books that I really loved that was in there was Pride and Prejudice, which made me want to go online to put the movie version of it with Colin Firth in my Netflix queue. While I was online doing that I also came across a CLEARINTERNET online offer that sounded really great, so I decided to sign up for it and change over my internet service for it.
I also decided to reread Pride and Prejudice and it just got me into why always love Jane Austen's books so much.

Okay no more triple Tweets and missing Identi.ca..life is good. The only thing in life I could really use right now is a vehicle that gets better than 18 miles per gallon. Seriously, a beater with a heater at this point is all I really would need as long as it gets good gas mileage. Of course, I would never get rid of my beloved Blazer. He'd be my backup man lol. Anyway, all is now (finally) consolidated into Firefox, for which I am grateful because it was my first web browser outside of Internet Explorer and I hated for it to be so utterly useless.
I can now be rid of the giant albatross hanging from my neck, affectionately known as Flock. It was great for what it did but it didn't come close to integrating all of my social networks and blogs. Often the blog poster was buggy or it would forget login information seemingly at random. Good times, she says sarcastically.
Now, using Amplify, I can link to Posterous and Ping.fm, and this combination now takes care of all my blog posting needs.

Finally resolved multiposts on Twitter

Okay I got those pesky multiposting issues taken care of that was plaguing Twitter..i.e. the 3 times posted everything lol. Now I'm still trying to solve the issue of posting to Identi.ca..which apparently hasn't been posting anything at all from the service I used to use to post to it, Ping.fm. Now I have Amplify and Ping.fm set to post to Identi.ca and still nothing. No wonder I never had any comments from it :D

At this time, not sure if it's a problem with the API or what. On a side note, I've been thinking about purchasing a new domain for all my 'non-Linux' content

Finally found that movie!

Today I finally got to watch a movie I saw when I was about 6 and didn't know the name of..all these years no one else knew the name of it either...well, I posted what I could remember on a website forum for horror movie fans such as myself :) called Best-Horror-Movies.com and they have an entire section of archives for people searching for the names of movies they've seen. I got a response for mine and actually got the name of the movie, which incidentally is called Something Evil (1972). Even better was that someone had posted it on YouTube in parts, so I got to watch it..not a whole lot like I remembered but there were bits where I was like oh yeah, I remember that. So, oddly enough, a weight was lifted that I hadn't even realized was there. Odd how a movie can stick with a person to the point they look for the name of it for 20 years (okay, more than that).....

I'm doing a little happy dance right now.

LG Vu Crashes Forwarding Multimedia Message

This is kind of a random post but I figured there would be people that it applies to, so here goes. I recently got an LG Vu. (I will be doing a review on my tech site, Obsessive Compulsive Linux Disorder soon) and every time I went to forward a multimedia message, the darn thing would just crash and reboot. After some frustrating searching, I found the solution. For some reason the Vu doesn't like it when you have a signature turned on. So in order to forward a multimedia message, do the following:

1. Tap Menu key (blue square with white dots)
2. Tap Messaging
3. Scroll down (all the way) to Message Settings and tap.
4. Tap Text Message
5. Tap Insert Signature
6. Tap Off.

Now, you can forward your multimedia messages just fine. You can have your signature turned on if you want to forward regular text messages (text with no pictures).

Just recently, I was able to get another vehicle (thanks to the help of my brother) after being carless for about a year. I was in a bad car accident; some dumb kid hit me and totaled my car. Of course, the expenses that go with owning a vehicle can be quite high.

On this particular site I was using, I even learned something new about car insurance. Different types of vehicles are charged different insurance rates. I knew that sports cars had higher insurance premiums but I did not know that SUVs also have higher insurance rates due to the damage they are capable of inflicting on other vehicles. In addition, foreign cars are more expensive to insure due to the higher prices of parts and labor costs so it's better to buy American! This kind of information has saved me a lot of money .

I'm glad I came across this site so that I could find all the information I needed about getting insurance for my Blazer. Everything I could think of to ask was covered, including why having an insurance agent is not always the best way to go!

The Sense of Smells

Have you ever walked by someone and they just smelled so good that you stop them and ask what fragrance they are wearing? I have done that more than once just to compare the answers that I get. It's funny to me that most often in my case, the answer is Snuggle Fabric Softener. Apparently this is one of my favorite smells lol. When I ask someone and they are wearing some kind of perfume or cologne, the answer can vary quite a bit each person I ask. It would seem that a person's natural odor combines with certain fragrances to smell really good (or bad as the case may be).

Another of my favorite scents is Sour Apple Jolly Ranchers. I love sour apple practically anything lol. I saw this site about Demeter spray scents that smell like various yummy smells that are around everyday.

One of my favorite smells is gingerbread. Just thinking about it is making my mouth water! Now I want to get some Gingerbread cologne at Demeter spray scents and they are a great deal too!

Bargain hunting again

As you, my loyal readers know, I am always on the endless search for a great deal. Of course, I am notoriously cheap so I am looking for deals particularly on things I need and use quite often. I am considering changing my internet service, as my current contract is about to expire. Now that I have a laptop, I am looking into wireless (which I know little to nothing about).

I have found a good site that utilizes searching in the same manner as Google, so that as many results as possible are included. This is a great advantage over only getting results whose owners have paid for their search results inclusion.

Anyway, back to the searching itself. I know next to nothing about wireless routers and such but now I have a lot more information to work with. I even know exactly what wireless card my laptop has, what speed it runs and what equipment it will work with.

Once I was done with that, I turned my attention to the never ending hunt for "the perfect cellphone." One of my friends got me addicted to this, I swear. I love to get my hands on different phones and test out all the features and such. Right now, I have a Nokia 5300 MusicXpress phone, which is great..but now I want to try out a completely different brand, Motorola. I have been notoriously against Motorola in the past, for the fact that they waste a lot of space on their phones with a wedge..of nothing. On their flip phones, this results in such a tiny screen; it's a wonder everyone with a Motorola phone doesn't have to get glasses. They do have a candy-bar style phone that I am wanting to try out, as it has a 5 MP camera on it. So, trying to find the lowest price on that, I searched it using ShopWiki. I got several results, with the price ranges included in the search results. I got search results from stores that I never would have expected and some I did. Either way, I had many more options than when using the traditional shopping search engines.

This includes my 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Smith (name changed for family's privacy) Shortly after I had gone on to high school, we found out that Mrs. Smith was diagnosed with mesothelioma. She passed away shortly afterward. She had taught at this school for over 30 years.

So now I encourage all teachers who have taught for many years at a very old school to go get tested to make sure they have not contracted this deadly disease. If caught very early, a patient has a good rate for survival. Of course, treatment is expensive and difficult for the families of those affected. Financial help is available to help those afflicted and their families so they can get the help that they deserve. New glasses saga continues

I am just playing the waiting game now. I am holding for a call from Illinois Eye Express; hopefully they will tell me the new frames I wanted are in so I can go get new specs. I can't wait. I have really liked the ones I had but I lost the sunglasses clip that goes to them. For some reason, the price of those jumped up so high I can't afford them now, so I am getting Transition lenses. I hope I like them as much.

Here lately, I have been very slowly redoing some of the decor in my apartment. I am currently working on my bedroom. Just last week, I bought a new comforter bed set that was on sale at Kmart. It's one of those "bed in a bag" type sets, although it's not called that. The new comforter is black and gray; best of all, it's reversible for a fresh new look any time.

For quite some time I have been wanting a headboard to go with my bed, so I was looking around to see what options I have, when I found a great site that sells western furniture. This site sells log and various wood furnitures in different styles, such as western and rustic. Their wood furniture is absolutely beautiful and built to last.

While looking for a headboard, I found one that I absolutely loved right away. For my bed, I require a queen size headboard and I found this one. It is made of red oak, which is both sturdy and long lasting as well as very pretty. The design of the headboard (and footboard) is made to look just like barn doors, which appealed to me quite a bit. I grew up in the country and I loved it. This bed makes me feel like I am coming home. The bold looks would stand out in any setting and would definitely be the centerpiece of my bedroom, creating a striking contrast with the white walls.

Things are really heating up

It has been cold, colder and downright miserably cold here in Illinois these past few months. Just a couple of days ago, it actually snowed a little. In April!! At times like these I wish I was still living in Arizona. One thing I never suffered from when I lived in Arizona was the cold.

In fact, most people thought something was very wrong with me when I didn't wear a jacket in December. It was 55 at the time. In Illinois, that's good camping weather. In Arizona, people are complaining about how cold it is. I lived in Phoenix, Arizona and at the time, there were records being set, such as 128 degrees. Now that's hot. Other places in the Phoenix area were a little cooler, such as Scottsdale.

However much I don't personally like to be extremely hot, it is true that 128 degrees in Arizona is significantly different than 98 degrees in Illinois. In Scottsdale, it would feel like stepping into a giant oven while in Illinois it would feel like stepping into a giant sauna. Dry heat is good for breathing conditions such as asthma and chronic bronchitis, so one might consider buying homes in Scottsdale if he/she suffers from one of those. My own grandpa suffered from severe asthma and lived in Arizona for a number of years while I was growing up.

I am definitely thinking about going somewhere warmer next winter if we have another one like this one. It was so miserably cold all the time, my arthritis was a misery for nearly 5 months. That was another thing I didn't have to worry about in Arizona. I know if I do decide to winter there next year, I can rely on several good people to assist me with my living needs.

Everyone knows that 3 of the most stressful life events are getting a new job, having a baby and moving. Being familiar with all three of these life-altering events, I would have to say that, by far, the most stressful of the three is definitely moving.
